Residential Solar Systems
Gold Coast, Brisbane & Northern NSW

Solar Set designs and installs home solar and battery systems across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Northern NSW. Every system is engineered in house, installed by CEC-accredited electricians, and specified for coastal conditions as standard.

Most Gold Coast homes land on a 6.6kW or 8.8kW system. A 6.6kW system generates roughly 24-30kWh a day and covers 60-80% of a typical household's use.

What's in a home solar system

A home solar system has three parts, plus a battery if you want one.

Solar panels sit on your roof and turn sunlight into DC electricity. On the Gold Coast they need a coastal corrosion rating.

An inverter converts that DC into the AC your house runs on. String inverters suit simple roofs. Microinverters suit roofs with shade or several orientations. A hybrid inverter lets you add a battery later without replacing anything.

Your meter is replaced with a bi-directional one that measures what you use and what you export.

A battery stores what you generate during the day. You use it at night instead of buying it back at retail rates.

During the day the panels supply the house first. Surplus charges the battery, then exports to the grid. At night you draw from the battery, then from the grid.

Most Gold Coast homes fit a 6.6kW or 8.8kW system. The packages above show what those cost installed. Prices include the federal STC discount and coastal-rated mounting.

Four things affect the price:

  • Your roof changes the labour cost. Tile takes longer to work on than Colorbond.
  • Panel tier is the next lever. Tier 1 panels cost more up front. They hold their output longer.
  • Coastal-rated components add to the bill. Within a few kilometres of the water they are not optional.
  • Inverter choice only matters if you might add a battery later. A hybrid costs more now. It saves you a replacement then.

Payback depends on two things: what you pay per kilowatt hour now, and how much of your generation you use during the day rather than export. We work it out against your actual bills before you commit to anything.

What it costs on the Gold Coast

Choosing the right size

Most Gold Coast homes need between 6.6kW and 8.8kW. Your last quarterly bill tells you which end you sit at. It shows your daily average in kWh.

Match that number to a system:

  • 10 to 15kWh a day suits a couple or a small household. That needs a 5 to 6.6kW system.
  • 15 to 25kWh a day covers most three and four bedroom homes on the Gold Coast. That needs 6.6 to 8.8kW.
  • 25 to 40kWh a day is a four or five bedroom home with a pool or ducted air conditioning. That needs 10 to 13.3kW.

Allow for what you will be running in a few years, not just today. An electric vehicle adds 10 to 15kWh a day. A pool adds more again. Panels cost less to fit during the install than to retrofit afterwards. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one.

A battery earns its money only if you use most of your power after dark. If you are home during the day using what the panels make, it will take far longer to pay back.

It is usually worth it when you are on a time-of-use tariff, when your street loses power in storms, or when you want to stop exporting at a few cents and buying the same power back at retail rates.

Hold off if you already have a legacy feed-in tariff above 15c, or if you expect to move within five years.

South East Queensland has no regulated minimum feed-in tariff. What you are paid for export is whatever your retailer offers. Those offers sit well below what you pay to buy power back. A battery lets you use your own power instead of selling it cheap and buying it back dear.

Rebates and incentives

There are two federal rebates available. Both come off the price before you pay. What you earn for exported power is set by your retailer.

Small-scale Technology Certificates are a federal discount on systems under 100kW, taken straight off the quoted price. Your installer does the paperwork. The value steps down every year until 2030. The discount is bigger today than it will be next year.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program does the same job for batteries. Since 1 May 2026 it has stepped down every six months rather than annually. It also tapers by size. Batteries up to 14kWh attract the full rate. Anything larger gets less.

Feed-in tariffs decide what you are paid for the power you export. Regional Queensland has a regulated rate, set each year by the QCA. South East Queensland does not. On the Gold Coast the number is whatever your retailer offers.

Built for the coast

Salt air is the reason cheap solar fails early on the Gold Coast. It rusts at the fixings first. Then the rail joins go. The failure shows up as a warranty claim in year six, on a system sold as a twenty-five year asset.

Every Solar Set residential install includes:

  • Marine-grade aluminium rail and stainless steel fixings throughout
  • Corrosion-resistant cable glands and junction boxes, sealed to the enclosure rating
  • Anti-corrosion treatment on exposed metal surfaces and cut edges
  • Coastal-rated panels, verified against the manufacturer’s certification rather than assumed

Ask any installer quoting your home how they handle coastal corrosion. If the answer is vague, or the line item is missing from the quote, you are being quoted an inland system for a beachside roof.

Residential solar FAQs

How long does installation take?

Most residential systems are installed in a day. Larger systems, or roofs needing extra structural work, run into a second day. Grid connection and meter changeover are handled by your retailer. Those typically take a further one to four weeks.

What happens on cloudy days?

Output drops but does not stop. Panels still generate from diffuse light, typically 10 to 25 per cent of a clear-sky day. Your system draws the shortfall from the grid automatically.

Will solar cover all my power needs?

A 6.6kW system covers 60 to 80 per cent of a typical household’s use. Covering everything means a larger system, a battery, or shifting more use into daylight hours. Running the dishwasher and pool pump at midday is the cheapest change you can make.

Can I add panels or a battery later?

Yes, if the system is designed for it. A hybrid inverter installed up front makes adding a battery straightforward. Adding panels depends on your inverter’s headroom and your available roof space. That is why sizing slightly high at the start is worth the small extra cost.

What happens during a blackout?

A standard grid-connected system shuts down during an outage. That is a safety requirement: it cannot feed power into lines being worked on. A battery with backup capability keeps nominated circuits running. Not every battery includes it, so ask.

Do I need council approval for solar on the Gold Coast?

Not for a standard rooftop install. Heritage-listed properties and some body corporate arrangements are the exceptions. Grid connection approval from Energex is required. Solar Set handles it.

How long do solar panels last?

Tier 1 panels carry 25-year performance warranties. Most still produce above 85 per cent of rated output at that point. Inverters run 10 to 15 years and are the component most likely to need replacing once. On a coastal roof, corrosion-rated mounting is what decides whether the rest of the system reaches those numbers.

Will solar panels damage my roof?

Not when mounted correctly. Every penetration is flashed and sealed. On tile roofs, any tile cracked during installation is replaced. A badly mounted system leaks. That is another reason to check who is doing the physical work.

Where we install

We install across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Northern NSW. Salt exposure changes suburb by suburb. Energex and Essential Energy run different connection processes. The rebate position in Northern NSW is not the same as Queensland’s. All three change how a system is specified.

On the Gold Coast we cover Burleigh Heads, Robina, Mudgeeraba, Currumbin, Southport, Coomera and Helensvale.

In Northern NSW we cover Tweed Heads and Kingscliff. Essential Energy runs the connection there, so the process differs from Queensland’s.

Across Brisbane we cover the metro area.

Not listed? We almost certainly cover you. Call 1300 330 923 and we will tell you straight away.

How to choose a solar installer

Start with three checks. Then judge everyone who passes on how they quote your roof.

The three checks: CEC accreditation, a current Queensland electrical licence you can look up yourself, and public liability and workers’ compensation cover they will show you on request.

Then check they have:

  • A local address you can drive to
  • Several Tier 1 panel brands on offer, rather than one brand pushed at every customer
  • A warranty process set out in writing
  • Someone who gets on your roof before they quote it

Walk away if you see:

  • Pressure tactics and today-only pricing
  • A quote produced from satellite imagery with no site visit
  • A price 20 to 30 per cent under everyone else
  • A vague answer when you ask about coastal specification

Ask every installer:

  • Do your own teams install, or subcontractors?
  • Who honours the warranty if the manufacturer goes under?
  • Can I see a job you finished in my suburb this year?
  • How do you handle coastal corrosion on my roof?
