How much is the federal battery rebate worth?
The federal battery rebate is worth about $250 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh of a battery installed between 1 May and 31 December 2026. Each usable kWh earns 6.8 Small-scale Technology Certificates, and each certificate is worth about $37. Capacity above 14 kWh earns less. The next 14 kWh earns 60% of the full rate, and capacity from 28 kWh to 50 kWh earns 15%. Capacity above 50 kWh earns nothing.
| Usable battery capacity | Certificates | Approximate discount |
|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | 68 | $2,500 |
| 13.5 kWh | 91 | $3,350 |
| 20 kWh | 119 | $4,400 |
| 28 kWh | 152 | $5,600 |
Figures apply to batteries installed between 1 May and 31 December 2026 and assume a certificate price of $37. Your quote shows the exact amount. The tiers mean most homes get the best value per kWh from a battery of 14 kWh or less.
When does the battery rebate go down?
The battery rebate goes down every six months, in January and July, until the program ends in 2030. The rate drops from 6.8 to 5.7 certificates per usable kWh on 1 January 2027, which takes it from about $250 to about $210 per kWh. The Clean Energy Regulator sets the rebate by the date the battery is installed, not the date you sign the contract. Installing before a step-down keeps the higher rate.
Homeowners, small businesses and community organisations can all claim the battery rebate, with no income test. The battery has to meet five conditions:
- It is on the approved product list, with between 5 kWh and 100 kWh of usable capacity.
- It is connected to new or existing rooftop solar, so a battery added to the solar you already have qualifies.
- It is capable of joining a virtual power plant, although you do not have to join one.
- It is installed by an accredited installer such as Solar Set.
- It is the only battery rebate claimed at that property.
Most homes with solar already meet the conditions, so the question is usually which battery to choose. Our Queensland battery rebate guide covers sizing and payback for Gold Coast and Brisbane homes.
Who can claim the battery rebate?
How much is the solar panel rebate worth?
The solar panel rebate is worth about $1,650 on a 6.6 kW system installed in 2026. It comes from the same certificate scheme as the battery rebate. The number of certificates depends on the system size, your location and the years left until the scheme ends on 31 December 2030. The Gold Coast, Brisbane and Northern NSW all sit in the same zone, so the same system earns the same discount across our service area. The discount shrinks every January, so a 6.6 kW system installed in 2027 earns about $1,330.

What rebates can businesses claim?
Businesses can claim the same certificate discount on solar systems up to 100 kW, and on systems up to 1 MW from 1 October 2026. The Clean Energy Regulator expects to open applications for the larger systems in mid to late November 2026.
Systems over 1 MW earn Large-scale Generation Certificates, which pay over the life of the system instead of upfront. Small businesses can also claim the battery rebate and may be able to use the instant asset write-off.
Our guide to commercial solar financing sets out the tax side, and our mid-scale solar PV guide covers systems between 100 kW and 1 MW. Find out what we build for businesses on our commercial solar page.
What rebates apply in Queensland and Northern NSW?
Queensland has no state solar or battery rebate. The Queensland Battery Booster program closed to new applications in 2024, and any page still offering it is out of date. Queensland homes and businesses claim the federal rebates on this page.
Northern NSW homes can add three NSW incentives to the federal rebates.
- A virtual power plant payment. The NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme pays an extra incentive when you connect your battery to a virtual power plant. The payment comes from the provider after installation, not off your invoice.
- Interest-free loans. The NSW Home Energy Saver Program lends up to $15,000 at 0% for up to 10 years for solar, batteries and other approved upgrades. Households with a combined taxable income of $210,000 or less can apply.
- The Solar Sharer Offer. Since 1 July 2026, retailers on the Essential Energy network must offer a plan with free electricity from 11am to 2pm. Our Solar Sharer guide explains whether it suits a home that already has solar.
Our Northern NSW rebate guide shows how the federal and NSW incentives combine for a typical home.
How do you claim the rebates?
You do not have to claim anything. Solar Set creates the certificates, sells them and takes their value off your invoice before you pay. We handle the paperwork and the compliance records. The only incentive paid later is the NSW virtual power plant payment, which comes from your provider once your battery joins.

Solar and battery rebate FAQs
How much is the battery rebate per kWh right now?
About $250 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh of a battery installed between 1 May and 31 December 2026. The rate is 6.8 certificates per kWh at about $37 each. Capacity above 14 kWh earns 60% and then 15% of that rate.
Is the battery rebate still $370 per kWh?
No. That figure applied before the rebate stepped down. Since 1 May 2026 the rebate has been about $250 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh, and it drops again on 1 January 2027.
Can I get the battery rebate if I already have solar?
Yes. Adding a battery to solar you already have qualifies, as long as the battery is approved, can join a virtual power plant and is installed by an accredited installer.
Can I get the battery rebate without solar panels?
No. The battery has to be connected to new or existing rooftop solar. You can install both at once and claim the solar and battery discounts together.
Do I need to join a virtual power plant?
No. The battery only has to be capable of joining one for the federal rebate. In NSW, joining one earns the extra Peak Demand Reduction Scheme payment.
Do businesses get the same rebates as homes?
Mostly. Small businesses can claim the battery rebate on the same terms as homes. Any business can claim the solar certificate discount on systems up to 100 kW, rising to 1 MW from 1 October 2026. Small businesses may also be able to use the instant asset write-off, so speak to your accountant about the tax side.
